Metabolic pathway
Fiber fermentation
Colon bacteria ferment the fiber we cannot digest and give back short-chain fatty acids: acetate, propionate and butyrate. The map follows the butyrate branch, the one that directly feeds the cells of the gut.

- Acetyl-CoA + Acetate + 2 NADH + 2 Proton
- Out
- Butyrate + Coenzyme A + 2 NAD⁺ + Water

Fun facts
- Butyryl-CoA:acetate CoA-transferaseThe butyrate released here is the main food of the cells lining the colon. They get most of their energy from it, so those cells live on what some bacteria make from what we could not digest.
