Takes glycogen apart sugar by sugar to keep blood glucose up between meals. In the liver the glucose goes out into the circulation; in muscle it stays inside and is burned.

Fun facts

  • Glycogen phosphorylaseIt is the enzyme with which Carl and Gerty Cori described the first known hormonal cascade: adrenaline does not touch it, but activates a chain of messengers that ends up phosphorylating it.
